THE CLIP
But Hasan said America deserved 9/11.
The quote is real. The missing part is what he was criticizing and what he later said he meant.
“The quote is made up / it proves he wanted Americans to die.”
WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
The line is real. It appears in a blowback argument about U.S. policy; the surrounding record does not say that 9/11 victims deserved death.
The full record keeps the exact words, the policy argument, and Hasan's later clarification together.
THE SURROUNDING RECORD
The statement came during a 2019 Twitch stream while Hasan was reacting to a Joe Rogan interview with Rep. Dan Crenshaw. Crenshaw framed 9/11 as religious hatred; Hasan argued that U.S. military policy, including its role in Afghanistan and its alliance with Saudi Arabia, helped create the conditions for blowback. His criticism targeted government policy: he said 'America deserved 9/11' and repeated that the U.S. had 'brought it upon ourselves.' In the subsequent Young Turks discussion, he said he did not mean that the 3,000 people who died deserved to die, called the phrasing imprecise and inappropriate, and clarified that civilians were not his target.
