The praise is genuine. The same record includes a brief acknowledgment of Mao-era excesses.
“Hasan said Mao was great and never acknowledged the mass death under his rule.”
WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
The praise is real and sweeping. The clip also includes Hasan saying Mao-era China had “a lot of excesses,” while describing Mao’s role in creating the People’s Republic.
Hasan praised Mao as a great leader while acknowledging Mao-era excesses.
THE SURROUNDING RECORD
The quote is authentic, and it comes from a clip discussing Hasan's November 2025 China trip. Hasan explains that a Chinese police officer thought a meme was making fun of Mao Zedong. Hasan says he “never would and never will” make fun of Mao, calls him “one of the great leaders of this world,” and says Mao changed the entire planet. The clip was recirculated in July 2026 after Hasan appeared at the College Democrats of America convention.
The same passage contains a qualification. Hasan says there were “a lot of fucking excesses” and adds that the People’s Republic of China would not exist without Mao.
The clip shows strong praise for Mao alongside a brief acknowledgment of his government's excesses. It shows that he views Mao's historical role very positively.
