THE SURROUNDING RECORD
On May 11, 2025, Hasan returned to the United States from Paris and was pulled aside after using Global Entry at Chicago O'Hare. He was a U.S.-born citizen enrolled in the trusted-traveler program and was traveling to speak at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics. He said officers took him to a back-room detention area, questioned him for about two hours, and asked what he did for work and what he discussed on stream.
The politically important part of his account is the subject matter: he said the questions included Donald Trump, Israel and Palestine, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and whether he had provided financial or other support to those groups. He said he answered some questions because he wanted to understand and document the line of questioning. He was released, was not charged, and went on to give his University of Chicago talk.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that he had been referred for further inspection and released.
The account describes a real detention and politically focused questioning at the airport.
